Beaver Creek Cemetery
Beavertown, Broadwater County, Montana

Lat: 46°30'55"N, Lon: 111°35'40"W

Contributed by Charleen Spalding, May 05, 2001 [spalding@montana.com].
Total records = 54.

This cemetery was located northeast of Winston, Montana, Township 9 North, Range 1 East, Section 27 but was covered when the Canyon Ferry Reservoir was filled in 1952. The cemetery area is now below the water level. According to the records, the graves were moved to the Forestvale Cemetery near Helena and the Winston Cemetery (formerly Placer Cemetery) near Winston, Montana.

"Beaver Creek Cemetery - 1870. A lonely forlorn grave left by some early wagon train on a hill overlooking the conflux of Beaver Creek and the Missouri River was isolated no more. That spot became the Beaver Creek Cemetery. George Filson donated an acre of ground for this cemetery about 1868 or 70. A number of the Filson family were buried here. The first grave in this cemetery was in 1870 (Methodist). Approximately 35 graves were in this cemetery. One was a Civil War veteran, Knud Thompson, a native of Skandaborg, Denmark. He died in 1885. This grave marker was made of blue-gray metal. Another was "Daniel Boone" Filson who died in 1916. Alice Reynolds died in 1882 of a diphtheria epidemic and was buried here.

In 1950 all of the remains were moved to other cemeteries before the water of Canyon Ferry Lake cover this spot. A few of these remains were moved to the Winston Cemetery. They are all in the northwest corner. Some of these graves were moved to Helena cemeteries and elsewhere. The moving of these graves was put up for bids by the government. A coroner from Havre, Emil Ellison, was in charge of moving them." Broadwater County Cemetery book, page 19, which is located in the Broadwater County Museum, Townsend, Montana.

"Beaver Creek, Beavertown, eighteen miles southeast of Helena, was in Jefferson County when its post office was established in 1872. The office was closed in 1876, reestablished in 1878, closed again in 1884, only to be reinstated in 1885. The first postmaster was Thomas Pauley. The town was named for a nearby stream, which in turn had been named for the animals that inhabited it. Beaver and trappers disappeared; the prospectors came, and the town's name kept pace: in 1887 the community moved up to the railroad siding and changed its name to Placer." *Montana GenForum message dated April 28, 2000 from Merla Sears Van Norman: "I recently ran across an older newspaper article that included information about the first burial in a cemetery in Montana. It included the information about the grave of a young girl that died on a Wagon Train en route to Helena, Montana. There was a boulder used as a headstone and the name Alice Wimpey engraved in it with the year of 1867 below. Her birthdate could not be distinguished. She is buried in what is known as the Beaver Creek Cemetery over looking the Missouri River. It is believed that her parents only stayed in the area for a brief time and then moved on. No one was able to contact any relatives of this family in later years. They were possibly following the Gold Rush Trails. I hope this information will benefit someone researching this family". Sincerely, Merla Sears Van Norman.

Boulder Bar Cemetery
(aka Diamond City Cemetery and Graveyard Bar Cemetery)
Confederate Gulch, Broadwater County, Montana

Confederate Gulch is fifteen miles from Townsend by a dirt road.

The cemetery is on private property. It served Diamond City and Confederate Gulch and is located 3.1 miles up Confederate Gulch in the Big Belt Mountains. It is not visible from the road as it is about 500 yards to the right of the road and on top of a steep cliff. It is enclosed by a fence. According to records, there could be 65 people buried here. Area was viewed Aug 11, 2001.

Confederate soldiers captured in Civil War battles near Lexington, Missouri, were banished up the Missouri River by the Union commander. Two of the exiles, Washington Baker and Pomp Dennis, came from Fort Benton in the fall of 1864, prospecting as they went, toward Last Chance Gulch (Helena). In this Confederate Gulch, which is part of the Big Belt Mountains, they made a strike and prospectors began to pour in. Montana Bar and Diamond City were two of the richest areas in the Gulch -- an estimated $15 million worth of gold was taken out before 1870. Nothing is left now except a few mounds of earth which indicate where the buildings were." Roberta Carkeek Cheney, Names on the Face of Montana, The Story of Montana's Place Names, Mountain Press Publishing Company, Missoula, 1983.
"Diamond City began with the discovery of gold there Dec 03, 1864, by four ex-Confederate soldiers. It grew to a peak population of 5,000 in 1867. By 1880 most of the gold and the people were gone. A booming mining camp in Confederate Gulch, it was one of the state's richest gold strikes, located in the range of mountains that separates Broadwater and Meagher counties. Now a ghost town fifteen miles from Townsend, only mounds of earth show where the log cabins were. William Meek was postmaster when the office opened in 1867. It was active through December 1908 and then again for a few months in 1909. Mockel says that Diamond City was named for the pattern of the trails in the snow that joined the four claims in the narrow gulch. It was known as the wealthiest, gayest, and toughest place in Montana." Roberta Carkeek Cheney, Names on the Face of Montana, The Story of Montana's Place Names, Mountain Press Publishing Company, Missoula, 1983.

The following burials were recorded by Chancey Wood, a long time resident of Diamond City.

This cemetery is located north of Townsend, in Broadwater County, Montana, Township 7 North, Range 2 East, Section 29. Take the Centerville Road which is just before the Highway 12 bridge, turn left on Mill Road.

'Centerville was located on the east side of the Missouri River just across from the mouth of Indian Creek. It had a post office 1872-74 with John Robinson as postmaster, and again December 1874-83. The town faded when the railroad came in and built a station at Townsend.'

"Charity did not die in 1872, but in 1870, according to a squib in the Helena Herald of Feb 25, 1870, it read: ‘Found Dead — We had received a letter from a well known citizen of Springville, Meagher County, stating that John Boyce arrived in town on the evening of the 23rd and reported he had found, dead in her home, a woman by the name of Mrs. Charity Allen. [No particulars were given as to the cause of her death.] Mrs. Allen, for the past three or four months, has kept the Summit House that is about half way between Springville and Radersburg, on the main road.’ Additional information can be found here.

This cemetery was located near Townsend, Montana. Turn west on the Indian Creek Road, turn left on Springville Lane, left at College and Sixth. The location of the Hog-Em town is on the right just past the warm springs and the graves are west of the old townsite.

"Hog-Em was once a mining camp between Radersburg and Bedford that was later the village of Springville. The colorful name was originated by disappointed miners, who found that a few men had "hogged up" the pay claims in the area. (Western Interpretive Services). Two other camps there had equally descriptive names: Cheat-Em and Rob-Em." Roberta Carkeek Cheney, Names on the Face of Montana, The Story of Montana's Place Names, Mountain Press Publishing Company, Missoula, 1983. Other nearby towns with equally colorful names included Sinch'Em and Beat'Em.

There are no tombstones or markers but there are eight or more mounds and/or sunken graves. According to the Broadwater Bygones, "...the outlines of eight or ten graves to mark the first cemetery where old-timers said several children and some adults were buried prior to 1872, after that the Centerville cemetery was used."

Broadwater County Cemetery book, page 30, which is located in the Broadwater County Museum: "MAN BURIED IN HOG'EM. This little squib reveals the name of one man buried in the Hog'em Cemetery where all the others are still unknown. An incident in which Moore's Ferry was mentioned in the newspaper printed in the '80s is quoted here: 'Harley Burch discovered the body of a man lodged on a bar in the Missouri River near the Diamond "R" crossing and though the features were unrecognizable the clothing and articles found thereon proved it to be the body of Jack Wright, who last January committed suicide by walking into the river near Moore's Ferry. An inquest was held at the Bedford Hotel by Coroner Fisk. The body was put in a coffin and buried at Hog'em.' It has been said that of the nine graves at old Hog'em only one was a natural death -- the others were murders or suicides. These graves are still discernible."

This cemetery is located in Broadwater County, elevation 4040, Township 8 North, Range 2 East, Section 35, SW corner of N 1/2 of NE 1/4, deeded to the Roman Catholic Bishop of Helena, John Baptist Brondel, on March 22, 1899. As you leave Townsend going west on Highway 12, turn left on secondary road 284 and head north for approximately seven miles. The cemetery is located behind the church on the hill. In 1954 St. Joseph's Church was removed from its original setting in the valley at Canton and placed on ground connecting it to St. Joseph's cemetery. Viewed September 9, 2001.

"Canton was an old town in original Meagher County. The rich farm land around here supported some of the area's oldest settlements. The post office, established in 1872 with William Tierney as postmaster, was discontinued in 1935. When the Canyon Ferry Dam was built and the lake filled, all Canton Valley went under water." Lat: 46°30'06"N, Lon: 111°40'17"W

Contributed by Charleen Spalding, May 05, 2001 [spalding@montana.com].
Total records = 118.

This cemetery is located on Cox Road, Township 9 North, Range 1 West, Section 25, northwest of Winston, Montana. Numerous graves are sunken and unmarked. Several graves are marked "Unknown US" and these are some of the re-interred graves from the Beaver Creek Cemetery which is now underwater from the Canyon Ferry Reservoir.

"Winston Cemetery or Placer Cemetery. One grave is dated 1883, another, Robert Herd died in 1890, age 37 years, Murray MacMillan, a war veteran, died in 1991 and is marked with a metal monument. The present Winston Cemetery was first known as the Placer Cemetery. It was established by the Miner's Union. Here the miners or members of their families could be buried at the expense of the union. In the northeast corner are white markers on graves of these miners. In the northwest corner of the cemetery are the Beaver Creek graves, moved in 1950. Placer was established about 1880 and had a population of 14 people. It was a stopping place for travelers driving between Helena and Townsend. It had a hotel, store, post office and saloon. Placer was moved when the railroad was built and given the name Winston. Winston and the Winston area still use the cemetery as a burial ground." Broadwater County Cemetery book, page 19, which is located in the Broadwater County Museum, Townsend, Montana.
"Winston is between Townsend and Helena. Among the early settlers there was the Beatty family, ancestors of Norma Beatty Ashby, who currently hosts "Today in Montana," a statewide television program. Winston began with Fred Goudy's Saloon, which was followed by the Duncan Hotel, a combined restaurant and rooming house. The Duncans worked to promote the town after it was platted by the Northern Pacific Railroad, and farmers and ranchers settled the area. The Dodge brothers operated a rooming house in a rock building that still stands, though deserted and crumbling. Mines in the area were active 1908-18 and 1926-28, producing gold, silver, copper and lead. The biggest mine was the East Pacific, which was almost a town in itself, with shops, offices, two saloons, and a three-story bunkhouse for 150 workers. This place was sometimes referred to as Eagle City (Barbara Baum in Broadwater Bygones). The post office was established in 1892 with Warren Dodge as postmaster, but another record shows George Lamb in the position -- annual compensation, $304.21. Winston was named during the railroad-building days for P.B. Winston, a contractor for the NP. Previously the area was known as Placer; the depot known by that name was loaded on a flatcar and moved to Winston. There was also a railroad siding and community near here called Beaver Creek and later, Placer. One of the first settlers around Winston was George Beatty. He was a young New York man who was "doomed to die" -- presumably from tuberculosis -- who set out for Montana in the 1860's, hoping the mountain air would add a year or two to his life. He even brought his tombstone with him, and carved on it: My mother's prayers kept me out of Hell. Thank God for a blessed hope beyond the grave. Beatty stored the tombstone in a back shed and when he died -- at age ninety-two -- they put it on his grave in Helena, where it can be seen." He is buried in the Benton Avenue Cemetery. *Montana GenForum message dated April 28, 2000 from Merla Sears Van Norman: "I recently ran across an older newspaper article that included information about the first burial in a cemetery in Montana.
