A view of the west slope of the Big Belt Mountain Range
from the Missouri River near Townsend, Montana.

The A-26 aircraft crashed on the east (far) side of the mountain range at the point
indicated on the photo.  A small increase in altitude or a flight course that was a
short distance closer to Helena, and their flight would have ended with a routine
instrument approach to the Helena Airport.  The early Winter Snow Storm was the
determining factor, and the consequence was the tragic loss of the aircraft and
two veteran Airmen.
