from the Missouri River near Townsend, Montana. The A-26 aircraft crashed on the east (far) side of the mountain range at the point indicated on the photo. A small increase in altitude or a flight course that was a short distance closer to Helena, and their flight would have ended with a routine instrument approach to the Helena Airport. The early Winter Snow Storm was the determining factor, and the consequence was the tragic loss of the aircraft and two veteran Airmen. Troy Helmick photo |
