TONY JOE WHITE

Polk Salad Annie (3:46) - This song is slightly faster than moderate and set in the bayous of Louisiana. Instruments include horns and a harmonica. The title character is even meaner than the alligators. Her father is lazy, her mother is in jail, and she survives on nothing but polk salad, hence her nickname.

JACKIE WILSON

Lonely Teardrops (2:40) - The tempo is moderate, with a tambourine sounding out each even-numbered beat. The narrator wonders why teardrops are not falling from his eyes because his heart is crying after his girlfriend left him; he is begging her to at least promise him that she'll come back. I also like John Fogerty's version, although he only sings the chorus repeatedly.

(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher And Higher (2:55) - Here the tempo is faster and the mood is happier. The opening bass solo and the horns in the middle instrumental sound cool. The women who sang behind Jackie in this song sound pretty, too. Most of all, I like how disappointment is personified in the second verse as a man who was the narrator's closest friend until the girl entered his life.
